Nickel Boys director RaMell Ross shares 5 films that affect him as a cinephile and filmmaker
Plot
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, “Nickel Boys” chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African-American boys who navigate the harrowing trials of a Florida reform school together.
A heartbreaking tale of abuse and mistreatment of young people of color in a reform school
Young Girl Written, composed, and produced by Herschel Dwellingham Starring Frank Lynch Courtesy of Grass of Home Productions and Publishing (BMI).
While I appreciate the ambition behind it, it unfortunately and somewhat paradoxically distances me from the main character
It is told exclusively from the subjective point of view of the main character and a fellow inmate he befriends at school.
Some early scenes felt a bit contrived and forced with this technique, the dialogue never flowed naturally
Watching it at the Stockholm Film Festival without subtitles was also a challenge, as it was very difficult to understand the dialogue in certain scenes.
You could pick up on the events, but you couldn’t pick up on the details
Despite these quibbles regarding the stylistic choice, the story is still quite engaging, but overall it could have been even more so with a more traditional narrative.
