They certainly only develop characters and set a unique tone
Spies, London, Keira, Ben, quality cinematography, a great soundtrack – what could go wrong? Plus, I already know this is my favorite genre and I’ll overlook any shortcomings that might arise. But when the dialogue in Episode 1 was slow, a few moments lingered too long, and scenes with attempted Quinten-esque dialogue left me flat, I tried to console myself.
I was wrong
As the episodes wore on, I realized that this show wasn’t going to deliver. Not just disjointed, but with few or no characters I actually cared about. Honestly, I don’t know how magic happens, but I was deeply drawn to the stories and characters in Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, The Diplomat, and even The Old Man – despite all their flaws.
I’m so sad for what could have been
Add to that the lack of stakes and numerous misses of basic details, and the annoying: intrigue ratio became too high to be enjoyable. Yes, all the spy basics are here in Black Doves, but somehow there was no salt in the recipe and by E03 I was already cranking up the playback speed. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
